Wear It Purple Day

August 28, 2015

Wear It Purple is a youth-led organisation that exists to support and empower rainbow (i.e. sexuality and gender diverse) young people. Founded in 2010 by two Australian teens, Wear it Purple Day has grown into a world-wide celebration of diversity and pride. The message has travelled around the globe and people have joined us in Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA, Canada, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.

Wear it Purple has a simple message: you have the right to be proud of who you are. Sexuality or gender identity does not change this. The idea is simple: Wear it purple if you agree.

Through the public outpouring of support, the aim is for rainbow young people everywhere to know that their support-base is far greater than they could have anticipated. As more purple is seen yearly at school, in workplaces, on the streets and online, we are saying to rainbow young people everywhere: you are not alone.

In the lead up to Wear It Purple Day we encourage you to show your organisational support. Here are some more ideas on how you can get involved:

  • Make your own purple ribbons to wear on the day. A roll of purple ribbon and safety pins are all that is required to make your own!
  • Invite your colleagues to a purple themed lunch or morning tea! The theme doesn’t just have to stop at what you’re wearing. You could have purple food, a purple cake, purple drinks. The purple possibilities are endless…
  • Hold a guessing competition…How many purple jellybeans/skittles are in the jar? How many purple foods can you name?
  • Upload photos to the Wear It Purple Facebook or Twitter page, or why not create a YouTube clip and post online
