STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
Sapphire – LGBTQ Women
After a sold-out event in Adelaide in June, we will be holding our next ‘Lead and Influence: LGBTQ Women Paving the Way’ event in Brisbane on 21stAugust, bringing together six diverse women to share their unique experiences with leadership and navigating being a leader, in a TEDx style format.
Recent global social movements on gender equality highlighted the impact of passionate, considered action, regardless of whether the individuals involved were seen as leaders in the traditional sense. Our event will aim to redefine what ‘leadership’ means, and empower LGBTQ women to harness their leadership potential.
Tickets will go on sale on Friday 9th August at Midday. You can access the Eventbrite page for more information and to purchase tickets here. You will not be able to access tickets before then.
Please share this with anyone in your organisation based in Brisbane who may be interested in attending this event.
National & Regional Reach
On Tuesday, August 20 we are holding another Regional Reach day, this time in Kalgoorlie.
We are being hosted by Curtin University on their city campus. The day will include two educations sessions and a members’ round table with networking drinks in the evening. In the afternoon we will facilitate a community yarn with members of local community groups. To come along to any or all of the sessions, please use the Eventbrite links in the flyer. They are all free.

MAKE IT PERSONAL
Andrew Georgiou here, a little bit about me. I identify as a gay man (he/his), born and have lived most of my life in Melbourne, except for a two year stint in London after University. St Kilda is where I call home and it reminds me every day how a diverse group of people can live in harmony with each other.
I love to travel the world chasing the sun, a cold climate holiday sounds more like pain than pleasure! Holidays usually revolve around the local food, some sightseeing, a lot of relaxing and late night aperitifs. I enjoy playing tennis (poorly), and attending all forms of arts and culture thanks to my partner.
I recently joined Pride in Diversity as a relationship manager as I know personally how important LGBTI and Ally inclusion is in the workplace. For the last 8 years, I was working in culture and change at Telstra and had the opportunity to proudly lead our VIC pride network (Spectrum) for the last 3 years. I learnt that we all have a role to play in changing the organisational norms and structures, and ensure our workplaces are inclusive for all people. Might sound corny, but this is why I am excited to join such an important organisation!
Outside of work, I volunteer with GLOBE (Gay and Lesbian Organisation of Business and Enterprise) as a Director committee member. We look to enable Victoria’s LGBTI individuals and small business owners to thrive through connections, learning and support.

STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
Sapphire – LGBTQ Women
Sapphire visited Melbourne in July – partnering with Out for Australia to run ‘Lead and Influence: LGBTQ Women Paving the Way’, hosted by Clayton Utz. In July we are off to Adelaide, running the same event there, this time hosted by Capgemini. We will be visiting Brisbane in August, Hobart in September, Sydney in October and Canberra in December, so please let all the LGBTQ women based in these places know we are coming! Co-convenors Nicki and Sarah have written a Sapphire ‘toolkit’, developing the themes in the ‘Where are all the women’ report, and all the Pride in Diversity Relationship Managers are ready to share this with their members, to help them include initiatives for LGBTQ women in annual plans. Please contact your RM for more details.
National & Regional Reach
In May, we held a day of events for members and non-members which was hosted by Aurizon in Rockhampton. These included educations sessions on LGBTQ Awareness, Engaging Allies, a member roundtable to discuss issues and successes for local regional members, a panel discussion on the importance and aspects of regional LGBTQ inclusion and finally a wonderful networking drinks session hosted by member Hastings Deering at the very chic Headricks Lane.
In June we held our first National Reach day of events in Hobart. We were the guests of the ATO and attended by people from a wide range of members, non-members and local community organisations, including Woolworths, KPMG, Working It Out and the Tasmanian Police who brought along some colleagues from Hong Kong. We were honoured to have Rodney Croome, Dr Charlie Burton, Commander Robert Blackwood and Dr Lynne Jarvis join us for an enlightening panel discussion on the LGBTQ landscape in Tasmania. We finished up with some networking drinks at the cosy Cascade on Collins.
In August we are holding another Regional Reach day, this time in Kalgoorlie. We are being hosted by Curtin University on their city campus. We will hold the usual series of educations sessions and a members’ round table with networking drinks in the evening. In the afternoon we will facilitate a community yarn with members of local community groups. To come along to any or all of the sessions, please use the register via the Member Events page.

MAKE IT PERSONAL
Hi, I’m Ellie. My pronouns are she/her and I identify as bisexual – as well as a pun enthusiast, caffeine dependent, music lover, TV & movie nerd, AFL fan (go Lions!) and dog mum!
I recently commenced as a Relationship Manager with Pride in Diversity (PiD) after over 7 years in the financial services sector, most recently with QBE Insurance. In my day job at QBE, I was an Underwriter in the Lender’s Mortgage Insurance (LMI) team and my “gay” job was the co-lead of QBE Pride. QBE Pride worked closely with the Pride in Diversity team in areas such as implementing training, policy reviews and strategic initiatives. I’d never really known what I wanted to do “when I grew up” but being involved in the diversity and inclusion space seemed to be a pretty good fit – and here I am!
I believe that we are courageous when we share our whole story with our whole hearts. As a neurodiverse bisexual woman who grew up in Regional Queensland, I’ve experienced firsthand the negative impacts hiding your true self in the workplace can have. I hope to use my story (along with my risk assessment background, organisational experience and problem solving through creative thinking!) to make an impactful and meaningful difference to the lives of the LGBTQ community in the workplace.
The resounding YES result of the same-sex marriage vote shows that Australians know that equality makes us stronger. But being an Ally isn’t just reserved for our heterosexual counterparts – we should all be Allies within our own community! We need to ensure that no one is left behind and that the voices of the most marginalised within our community are heard, including the trans and gender diverse community, people with disabilities, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities and Indigenous Australians.
DAYS OF SIGNIFICANCE
July 14 – International Non-Binary People’s Day
While a relatively new addition to the calendar of Diversity Days, this is a day to celebrate and elevate non-binary people, and to educate and inform ourselves and others about what it means to be non-binary, and the challenges faced by this community. Non-Binary is an umbrella term for any number of gender identities that sit within, outside of, across or between the spectrum of the male and female binary. A non-binary person might identify as gender fluid, trans masculine, trans feminine, agender, bigender, etc. It can be complicated to understand, but it’s not difficult to be respectful and supportive of non-binary people. One of the simplest ways to be an ally is by including pronouns in your email signature, on your social media profiles, and when introducing yourself, especially if you are cisgender. Normalising the giving and asking for pronouns reduces the risk of misgendering anyone, and takes the expectation off non-binary people to always start that conversation.
